December 9, 2005 - Official Report of the Dickie Lake Food Drive
From Paula Elliott

Hi Everyone:
Many of you might have already received your thank you note from Doug & Bruce Thomas but I thought the I would put this on our web page for others to see what a great community we live in.

Christmas Food Drive On Dickie Lake

We have finally arrived at that magic date when we declare the collection of foods for the food bank complete. As in the past, many Dickie Lake residents have demonstrated their concern for others by participating in the annual collection sponsored by the Baysville Fire Dept. Our total mass from your efforts has tallied 1327 lbs. from 92 contributors and in excess of $1000.00 was donated. As well, many blankets were received for use by the fire rescue workers on your behalf. Take a BIG bow folks as you have once again recognized the spirit of the season through your generosity. Thanks to each of you for thinking of others.

December 1, 2005 - Food Drive A Success
From Paula Elliott

As many of you know, Doug and Bruce Thomas organized a Food Drive for the Baysville Fire Department and the community of Baysville. According to the signs posted, we had 86 donors this year. Everyone is to be commendended on their efforts. With all the diasters around the world this past year, it is good to see that we did not forget the ones in our "Dickie Lake Community".
I know that Bruce is sending out letters with all the particulars of the Drive but I told him that I would post it on our web page as well.
The end of November brought lots of rain and then some more rain. The lake was mostly frozen a week ago but after the rain and warm weather the lake is open again.
There is a big sign as you come in route A reminding winter visitors to the lake to park off the road so that the snowplow drivers can do their job.
Happy December everyone.
Paula Elliott

November 19, 2005 - Assessment Notice
From Paula Elliott

It seems that we have all been hit with increases in our tax assessments. We had a variance on our lot this past year so this is the first bill we have received including the variance.
Around the lake it seems that there has been an increase for everyone. I don't know how much. Even as full time residents, we don't receive much for our taxes. We do get our roads plowed and that is about all.
Hopefully, the mill rate will be lowered and we won't be too hard hit with taxes.

Paula Elliott

November 15, 2005 - assessment 2006
From John Teggart

My re-assessment astounded me this year.Am I the only disgruntled property owner? A 53.93% increase is hardly rational considering the fact that I'm a seasonal occupant with little or no services.Am I a voice crying in the Muskoka wilderness or are there others out there that share my concerns? John

November 8, 2005 - Where is the Hydro?
From Paula Elliott

Just thought I would keep those who live in the southern metropolis that here at Dickie Lake we have been without Hydro for almost 48 hours and they are not expecting to connect it until 11 pm, Nov, 8/05.
So when you daydream of the wonderful things that happen on Dickie Lake this is to let you know that some of our fun times can be frustrating.
Many of those who are permenant residents on Dickie Lake have generators or air tight stoves to keep them warm. Lots of candles are burning.
I think that we were hit with the tail end of the storm that hit Indiana. Anyway the trees up here did sway. Some broke. I haven't seen any damage as I have driven around the west side of the lake. A tree on the wires just beyond route A on Dickie Lake Rd seems to be the problem.
Many areas are still without hydro besides ourselves. Austin Terrace off Bulmarie Rd, Glenmount Road, Emsdale to name just a few. I had choir practice in Huntsville so that is where I got this information.
Take care everyone. Will send good news next time. Paula

October 31, 2005 - Hello From Dickie Lake
From Paula Elliott

Well the weather is turning colder day by day although we had a lovely weekend. Lots of leaves to rake.
Tonight is Hallowe'en.
The food drive is going quite well. There have been 55 donors to date and considering all the disasters around the world it is encouraging to know that we haven't forgotten those in need here at home.
The curling club is open and the leagues are starting this week. If you are a curler and would like to curl in a small Bonspiel call Bob Lawson 767-3423. The Baysville club has two sheets of ice. It is a very social club so stop by some Friday evening on your way up to the cottage.

September 30, 2005 - Not Much Happening???

Boy, not much news coming out of Dickie Lake these days. Us city folk might start thinking there's nothing going on up there.

August 30, 2005 - Thanks
From Paula Elliott

Paul:
Thank you for finding time to put the pictures on the web page. We did not have room in our August Newsletter for them. Seeing these pictures might make people think twice about releasing pike back into the lake.

August 30, 2005 - Loch Dickie Monster
From Paul

Scary eh!! Remember if you catch Pike in Dickie lake do not release them back into the lake. Apparently the MNR will be doing a survey in September to monitor the fish.

I don't have the information about who caught this beast. Could someone post that here. Thanks.

July 13, 2005 - Another website update...
From Paul Breslin

When you submit a news article you now have the option of including an image/photo along with it. Hopefully this will help encourage everyone to SUBMIT MORE NEWS!! :^)

If you have problems uploading check the file size limit on the submission form. Large images may take a while to upload so be patient when submitting articles which include a picture file.

BTW: News doesn't have to be terribly news-worthy.

For example: When we put our canoe in the water this spring Sandi jumped right in and decided to wait for us to go for a paddle. Snoozing in the canoe looks like a great idea to me...

May 4, 2005 - ICE OUT
From Brenda Richards

We do have a completely ice free lake, let the boating begin!
Along with the lack of ice comes the sightings of many interesting water fowl, we have been lucky to watch the migration of many birds this year which is very exciting.
Ice out was officially April 20, 2005.
As you may know Anna Landry and myself are the Dickie lake stewards and will be performing testing of our lake waters this season, should you be interested in what we are doing or would like to get involved please call us and we will let you know the details of when we are testing ( telephone or email info in the directory.) We hope that you have all read the Shore Primer that we sent to you with the "Ice out newsletter" This information is so important to our lake and we can not stress enough how important our lake is not only to our environment but yours and my pocket book (if we want to get personnal)
We will give more information on the "Dock Talk" which we mentioned and we hope that we can take advantage of this free service.
Until next time Happy Cottaging

March 26, 2005 - Easter at Dickie Lake
From Brenda Ridhards

Easter is early this year but it has brought with it the most lovely weather conditions. We still have a lot of snow but with the above O temps it make everything feel like spring is really arriving and we will soon be in the lake rather than walking on it.
It is ideal for a morning walk on the lake, the snow has become hard enough during the morning hours that it is very easy to hike. In fact this morning my dogs and I enjoyed a great morning walk.
The Landrys are harvesting their sugar maple sap and we have enjoyed maple snow toffee, what a treat. It takes a great deal of sap to make very little maple gold.
Dave Richards and Fred Landry have been working in the shop this winter making beautiful cedar strip kyaks, which Anna and I are very anxious to paddle this spring...Looking forward to ice out.
The Kayaks are going to be a custom product that the fellows are now selling, so if you are interested in a beautiful cedar strip kayak visit them on the web go to links Dickie lake boatworks.
